How Vertical Lift Pumps Work

Vertical Lift Pumps are a type of centrifugal Pump used for transferring sand-free dairy manure out of a storage tank. The Pump is installed vertically in the manure storage tank, with the Pump body submerged in the liquid. The motor is directly coupled to the Pump drive shaft. This Pump operates like a typical centrifugal Pump where the impeller creates a pressure differential, which draws liquid in. The effluent is then discharged to the next stage of the process, such as a Rotary Drum Separator or another tank.

McLanahan Vertical Lift Pumps feature a shredder on the impeller that shears long and stringy light-duty organic material against the Pump plate to prevent plugging. The shredder feature is designed to reduce soft solids to an acceptable size. Hard solids, such as sand, should be avoided to limit excessive wear on the Pump.

Vertical Lift Pumps can be used to transfer recycled water to Sand-Manure Separators and Dewatering Screens, to Rotary Drum Separators and/or to storage.

Yes, the McLanahan Vertical Lift Pump features a shredder that shears stringy hay and soft solids that may enter the Pump through the manure stream. The shredder feature is not, however, intended for heavy-duty chopping. Hard solids in the manure stream can destroy the chopping blade, so debris screening is highly recommended.

No, the McLanahan Vertical Lift Pump is not meant for transferring sand-laden manure. Hard solids, such as sand, can cause excessive wear on the Pump.
